Artist Statement
I write poetry as a form of encoding truth, my words soften the dose that I offer. Some truths are too hard to take in, some are too brusque, some are not ready to be shared, or should not be shared, directly. Some readers can feel what is eeking out in the spaces of the words. It becomes an unlocking of something known in their spirit. That is the intent, a healing gesture of words that direct unearthed feelings into a salve.
I was raised within the Iñupiaq worldview that my mother intentionally imparted into me. As the oldest grandchild, I was fortunate to be at the feet of Elders that had been living entirely off the land, in a time before the larger impacts of rapid movements of colonization. When I write, I pull from these imprints upon my spirit as a young child. I seek to bring their possible reactions to this futuristic world, as a way for me to understand how I am expected to navigate it as an Iñupiaq woman, as a descendant of Alasauraq and Qigñagaaluk, my great-great grandparents.
